A new UNESCO podcast tells stories of World Heritage sites of Latin America and the Caribbean
Made possible with the support of the Government of Brazil, the podcast deepens our understanding of World Heritage values and challenges and inspires the audiences to play a part in protecting these outstanding places around the world.
The mini-series explores three themes:
- Enslaved people of African origin: Exploring resilience and freedom through World Heritage sites – Enslaved people shaped history, development, culture and identity across Latin America and the Caribbean today. The episode takes the listeners to places that bear witness to one of the most painful chapters of human history, while affirming stories of struggle, resilience and triumph. Featuring: Valongo Wharf Archaeological Site (Brazil), Trinidad and the Valley de los Ingenios (Cuba), Blue and John Crow Mountains (Jamaica) and National Historic Park – Citadel, Sans Souci, Ramiers (Haiti).
- Climate change: Threatened heritage in a changing world – How is environmental change reshaping both natural and cultural sites and what does this mean for local communities? This episode reveals the way rising temperatures, shifting weather patterns and biodiversity loss are threatening not only landscapes, but also the knowledge, livelihoods, and identities linked to them. Featuring: Los Glaciares National Park (Argentina), Historic Bridgetown and its Garrison (Barbados) and Monarch Butterfly Biosphere Reserve (Mexico).
Connecting people, histories and World Heritage across borders – When World Heritage sites transcend national borders, international cooperation and shared conservation efforts become vital. Through this episode, the listers learn how heritage can connect peoples, cultures and ecosystems, while fostering dialogue and collaboration accross political boundaries. Featuring: Qhapaq Ñan, Andean Road System (Argentina, Bolivia (Plurinational State of), Chile, Colombia, Ecuador, Peru), Jesuit Missions of the Guaranis (Argentina, Brazil) and Talamanca Range-La Amistad Reserves / La Amistad National Park (Costa Rica, Panama).
